Fulton County Chairman John Eaves asks investigators to “follow every lead—no matter where it leads, or who it implicates”
John H. Eaves, the chairman of Fulton County, Ga., is calling for authorities to pursue a proper criminal investigation into recent allegations against R. Kelly, who has been accused of manipulating the lives of six women in a “cult,” BuzzFeed reports. In a statement (via local NBC affiliate WXIA), Eaves said he received information and evidence from the John Creek Police Department that he believes gives the Fulton County D.A.’s Office “all it needs to advance a criminal investigation of the well-known allegations.” He continued, asking the D.A. and his officers to “follow every lead—no matter where it leads, or who it implicates, and bring those persons to swift justice.” Eaves is expected to hold a press conference on the matter later today. Pitchfork has contacted R. Kelly’s representatives.
TMZ reports that the John Creek Police Department says “point blank, there’s no new evidence and no compelling reason to open an investigation into Kelly.” According to Fox 5 Atlanta, the district attorney has also declined to open a criminal investigation against R. Kelly at this time. Local reporter Aungelique Proctor noted that the D.A. says he “will examine the R. Kelly file to determine next steps.” In addition, a representative for the JCPD confirmed to Pitchfork that there is not currently an open investigation, nor is there new information regarding R. Kelly.
Buzzfeed News initially broke the “cult” story, for which reporter Jim DeRogatis spoke with three former members of Kelly’s inner circle, who claimed he “controls every aspect of [the women’s] lives: dictating what they eat, how they dress, when they bathe, when they sleep, and how they engage in sexual encounters that he records.” Parents of two of the women said they hadn’t seen their daughters in more than a year. Kelly’s lawyer Linda Mensch issued a statement denying the allegations, and sharing Kelly’s intention to “work diligently and forcibly to pursue his accusers and clear his name.” After the story was published, several shows on Kelly’s After Party tour were cancelled.
